How we build these lists
Every Top-X list is ranked using a single transparent formula: average rating × log10(verified Google review count + 1). This combines quality (the rating) and consistency (the number of reviewers who agree) into a single score that can’t be gamed by a venue with five 5★ reviews or by a venue with thousands of inflated 3★ ones.
Every venue on every list has also passed Spalist's 5-step editor verification — trade licence check, DHA/DOH/MOH medical licence check (where relevant), contact-channel test, on-site visit, and cross-platform review audit. Read the full editorial standards.
- Re-computed every 30 days
We re-sync each venue's Google reviews monthly, so rankings reflect the latest customer feedback — not a stale snapshot.
- Zero pay-to-rank
Featured-listing payments do not affect Top-X ranking position. Featured venues appear elsewhere with a clear badge.
Why our Top-X lists rank differently from Google's top results
If you Google “best Moroccan hammam Dubai” you'll see two kinds of result: paid hotel-spa listings and aggregator sites that scraped Google's own My Business data without visiting a single venue. Both miss what actually matters at the spa-buying moment — the difference between a 4.7-rated luxury Marina hammam that books out two weeks ahead and a 4.7-rated hidden Deira hammam where a 90-minute scrub costs a third as much. Our rankings exist to fix that.
The ranking formula — and what it can't do
rating × log10(reviewCount + 1) is the entire formula. The logarithm matters: a venue with 5,000 reviews doesn't outrank a venue with 500 reviews by 10×, only by ~1.5×. That keeps small but excellent operators in contention. We weight quality first, volume second.
What the formula doesn'tcapture: vibe, decor, therapist-of-the-day variance, whether a venue treats Emirati and expat customers identically, whether the marketing photos match reality. That's why every Top-X page also carries an editor's note — a one-paragraph human read on what kind of customer the venue is right for, written after at least one on-site visit.
What we don't do (and why it matters)
We don't accept paid placement on Top-X lists. A venue can be on a Spalist featured-listings programme and still rank #7, or not appear at all if its rating doesn't hit our cut-off. That separation — editorial rank vs commercial placement — is the one thing Google's 2024 Helpful Content Update was built to reward. It's also why we publish the formula instead of hiding behind a “proprietary algorithm.”
We don't list venues with fewer than 3 verified providers in a city. A “Top 3 Hydrafacial in Fujairah” list with only three Hydrafacial clinics in the entire emirate would be padding. When a category-city combo has fewer than 3 providers, we simply don't publish the list — the city hub page lists what does exist.
How rankings shift between months
The Google review sync runs on the 1st of every month. Venues that pick up a quiet 30-review month with a 4.9 average will climb past venues coasting on old reviews; venues with a wave of negative reviews (a manager change, a renovation period) will drop. We don't cherry-pick which months to sync — every list updates on the same monthly cadence so customers can trust that they're reading the same dataset across all 14+ Top-X lists.
Last methodology review: 2026-05-29. The formula has not changed since launch. If we ever update it, we'll publish a dated changelog rather than silently re-rank.
